Digitalization of locker systems
throughout Switzerland

Industry:

Public Transport

Year:

2024 - ...

Short Description

Initial Situation:

SBB and its partner companies operate 160 locations with locker systems throughout Switzerland, which are currently controlled by an outdated coin insertion mechanism.

Objective:

The search was for a company to modernize the existing systems so that all future payments could be processed electronically. In conjunction with this, the lock control system was also to be digitized. The control takes place via a web application that is connected to a comprehensive management platform.

Project Steps

Strategy Development/Analysis

We began the project with a detailed analysis of the existing mechanics to precisely transfer all relevant processes into digital workflows.

Based on the insights gained, we then defined the required sensors, actuators, and interfaces before creating an initial prototype for functionality and usability testing. Particular focus was placed on the development of a seamless, secure control platform that ideally manages and monitors all processes.

Prototyping

Based on the strategy developed, we produced ten prototypes. Even at this stage, we advanced the industrial design for future installation as well as the development of an individual lock in order to test all aspects. For the control system (PCB), we relied on a powerful microcontroller that can handle future requirements as well.

The ten prototypes were tested under real conditions over eight weeks. The insights gained are essential for series production.

Implementation

We developed a dedicated strategy for electronic components to ensure smooth series production. At the same time, the software (i.e., the backend) for controlling the solution is being created. In close collaboration with SBB, interfaces to internal platforms were built. A proven three-stage release strategy ensures stable operation.

Commissioning/Training

After production was completed, all products were thoroughly tested, and the various project stakeholders received comprehensive training. Special emphasis was placed on a simple yet robust system commissioning. The upcycling of old systems had to be implemented efficiently while still going through all control instances to ensure stable operation.

Result

In the fourth quarter of 2024, all SBB stations were equipped with the new locker system. Thanks to the successful project progress, SBB’s partner companies are scheduled to be integrated into the new system in 2025/2026.

All data streams were integrated into SBB’s ecosystem via interfaces, which significantly simplifies both operation and support.
